Here’s a shot from a Leather Waves 1897 photo shoot at Corral Beach. The outfit was made from two colors of goat suede, Coral and Turquoise reminiscent of the Santa Fe look that was popular then and continues to be now. Harem pants, tank top with fringe and a tiny fitted sleeveless jacket to go over.

I’m proud to say this wonderful and talented man is my cousin, Steve Wynn. Known to his fans around the world as the lead guitar and songwriting maven of Dream Syndicate and the Baseball Project. In 1994 he modeled and played in this slightly outrageous snakeskin print leather jacket for me and Leather Waves. A perfect fit, a look that is considered a classic now.

Beautiful Shirley Neal was spotted wearing one of Leather Waves wrapping leather necklaces at a Malibu Event this week.

Jackie Robbins and Jeff Herrera in their “Leather Waves” at the Malibu Playhouse last Friday night for the opening of “Blood Knot”. An engaging play about 2 brothers from South Africa, directed by our dear and generally fabulous friend Mr. Lou Gossett Jr.

So now it’s time to make a linning and sew it to the finished shell of this Deeerskin Cafe Racer Jacket for D. B. I use a heavy satin lining because it’s durable and wears well and because it’s shiny it so easy to slip in and out of, so it’s dark and slick. I added one of our newest vintage mortorcyle labels for fun. The topstiching is critical, and defines the jacket, so it’s done as carefully as possible. The finished product is so stealth and clean, even more refined than the original. It’s so soft and pliable that D. hardly knows he’s wearing it, with the exception that he’s warm and the jacket texture is sensual to the touch…kind of like happy a puppy, girls like to come up and touch it! lol The jacket comes out looking great in it’s superior quality plus refined simplicity. Dennis is so happy, the jacket fits perfect, and is his favorite retro design.

My good friend D.B. had a motorcycle jacket from the 1960s that he loves so much, wore it to just about to death, and it was actually getting a bit small. He pleadingly asked, could you remake this for me? Yes, of course, and so we began the journey of re-creating his favorite jacket. I started with a muslin pattern based on the jacket adding about 1″ all around. In some places D. hasn’t changed at all and in other areas we expanded it. I altered the pattern to the new perfect fit and began cutting the pieces. D. chose a soft but substancial black deerskin leather, one of my very favorites to work with. I cut and ironed all the pieces, deerskin tends to be wrinkled. We chose classic chrome zippers and I started with the pockets. Once all the zippers and pockets were in I designed the collar and added that. The classic “cafe racer” style has a short stand up collar that snaps close to the neck. The back got sew next with yet again another classic feature of this styled jacket, expanding pleats across the shoulders, for reach of the arm most notably when holding the handlebars of a motorcycle. Adding a zippered cuff another classic feature to keep air from running up the sleeves. Tomorrow watch as I finish this piece and we see the happy customer!

White leather and Spring in London 1984. Big yellow leather shopping bag, narrow and skinny leather jeans and leather jacket. Ready now to make the lining. I chose something fun and spirited yet in the same color tones to give the jacket a little flair. Next the leatherbound buttonholes finish off the front with large wooden buttons that have tiny daisys carved into them, that brings all the elements together and adds the finishing touch and a feminine feeling. I love it when a leather jacket looks like it was made for a woman! Sewing the jacket together to the lining and the final topstichting is always critical, because it screems professional! The topstitching also defines the entire piece so it must be done well. Lastly you can see on the model that I went in and redid the pockets with a quilted enhacement and changed the direction for using the pockets to the sides, definately easier to use. This piece becomes the everyday leather jacket that finishes any outfit, a go-to piece for your wardrobe.

Now this is the way to wear white leather in my humble opinion. Or, at least, the way we wore it in 1980. R.C. was my top male model model/muse (can a boy be a muse?), anyway I modeled all my male Leather Waves on him in those days. I mean….why wait for Memorial Day, bring on the white leather!!!

J.K. doesn’t ride a motorcycle, but really wanted a cool “motorcycle looking” jacket for a sporty look in his wardroble, and to wear while driving his new cool MiniCooper sportscar. He saw some washed leather jackets in local store that he thought were cool, and asked for this type of skin. The skin has a bubbled and textured finish that is really interesting from the skins going through a washing process. J loves his jacket, I’ve seen him wearing it, and it looks awesome on him. Later this week this jacket will be featured in my next “In the Shop” w/Jackie series and you can watch how I made it.

Leather Waves circa 1983, with my old friend J.H. and sadly can’t remember the sexy redheads name….I was doing alot of pink leather at the time, it was kind of punk. He wears a pink leather double-breasted sportscoat with mother of pearl buttons, she wears a a zipp front hip length cocoon styled jacket with a matching strait skirt in the same smooth pink leather. Taken on a full moon night.

*Here you will see that I used those stitched leather strips to tie-down the metal details to the staps, this gives the bag a bouncy fun look. I love tying things to bags because when the person who is wearing it moves, so do these little details, giving the wearer a visual of movement, sexy.

*I chose a linning that is a strong tapestry fabric, a modern geometric design with a perfect match in color tones. The interior is fully lined with a large zippered pocket on one side for important items that one would want separated inside the bag.

*More details include a champagne colored fox tail and some large bottle beads tied to the main zipper. The bottom of the bag gets sewn in with a thick leather stiffener that will eventually create the shaping of the bag. Volia, the finished bag, fun, practical, interesting and modern.

*This morning we will begin the process of making the Spring Purse that you saw in my post a couple of days ago.

*Many of us love the idea that a spring purse is one that has some color and I had a design in mind that is a composite of designs that are popular in handbags right now.

*Medium sized, modern with zippers for containment, double shorter straps than can be worn over a bent arm or tucked up under the arm by hanging on the shoulder. I sketched my design roughly because I like to discover a design as I am working with the materials.

*After drafting a general pattern, I will make detail adjustments as I proceed. Next I choose a beautiful golden leather with a bit of greenish tint as the color of the bag and found that I had a skin of stamped cowhide and some goat suede that were a tone-perfect match and began to cut the main pieces.

*Working out the placement on a stamped piece of leather is challenging as the symmetry of the pieces need to match, flaws in the skin need to be avoided, so the piecing also lends to design details. I begin to sew these pieces together adding a pocket for cell phone to the exterior as I do in every bag I make and choosing bright gold metal details, which I think just enhance the color combination.

Taken in the year 2000, this is a famous photo around Leather Waves. My daughter Cheyenne and our new puppy Lucy Ricardo, modeled turquoise suede and faux fur matching jackets for my newly created “Leather Waves Babe” line of children’s leather clothing. Lucy passed yesterday of old age, 14 years or about 98 in dog time. She was a wonderful and loyal companion, many people remember her from the shop where I used to bring her everyday. She’d greet the customers with licks and little nibbles on the fingers trying to make everyone she met a “littermate”. She will be missed and always remembered. In this photo, which was used for a Leather Waves advertising campaign, Lucy was 1 and Cheyenne was an 8 year-old thrilled with her new puppy and becoming a mom.

Vintage picture of the day….Grand Canyon 1990. I snapseeded this, adding some drama, although who needs drama at the Grand Canyon! Riding my Harley was a blast in those years, and even more special because I’d make amazing leathers to ride in. This jacket was very cool with it’s cowhide fur lining and fringes, and the leather chaps…as I recall at some point I sold that jacket right off my back!

Yes, this leather Sports Coat is 12 years old, and it is owned and loved by real rock star, one of the best rock guitar players in the business. I believe I made this for him in 1999 or 2000. It was sent over to me for it’s first repair in all these years, something not too complicated, where the lining had been shredded where it rubbed against his wallet chain behind the left bottom front pocket. I am marveling at the condition of the jacket, it’s still great looking, not too badly worn and style very hip. I actually love how the surface of the skin has worn a bit around the collar and lapel, shoulder seams and along the edges, the permanent wrinkles where this person bends his arm or sits.  This is what we like to call “character” that gives a leather garment a life and a history to the person who wears it. The fit becomes personalized too, draping on the body that wears it in a relaxed manner. The first part involves installing pockets, which are quite detailed, the zipper and putting the main body pieces together. Next I make the collar, an important part of this particular jacket because the neck of the client needs some special fitting. Once I’m past the collar I begin on the sleeve, installing the zippers and then attaching them to the jacket. Other details including the inside front flap (wind guard) and the topstitching to the front zipper are completed with care, as these are the most visual and visible of the jackets design details.

I love going out with handsome guys that wear my leather jackets and are SO HAPPY ABOUT IT, like these two. Nice Valentine, thank you Jeffie and Joel!

Colorblock from the 1980′s…black and white is always so stunning in fashion, we see designers using it over and over, every few years. It’s a modern concept. That’s me in 1982, in my first store in the Malibu Country Mart, I do believe I could still wear that dress today! Black suede and white leather shift with sleeves, by Jackie Robbins for Leather Waves.

Lucky me, I was invited to accompany the beautiful, stunning and talented actress Ms. Julie Carmen to a screening of the John Cassevetes film “Gloria” at the impressive and exciting LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), Valentines Day, this last Friday night. Julie was acknowledged for her role in the film classic. An amazing film showcasing the story of a “macho woman mobster” /more-than-a moll, who falls in love with and saves a small boy, a very cutting-edge concept somewhat unseen at the time of the movie’s making in the 1970′s. Julie’s role, as a puerto-rican wife and mother on the run, was riveting and dominates the film’s opening minutes.

Julie turned heads in her Leather Waves, black leather snapped pants and Leopard & Lizard print handbag which she cleverly paired with a red silk jacket. I got lucky when we were photographed together, me in my long leather coat over pink knit. Thank you Julie, what a wonderful and memorable Valentine!

I wanted to design and make a dress for Valentines Day. Something hot and stylish. I started off with some perforated red lamb suede, but then had a change of HEART, and decided to make something new for my “no-animal” line of leather goods. I had purchased some faux leather fabric that was a beautiful deep red with a continuous exotic lizard print on it, and chose it as my inspiration. I wanted to do something fitted, yet easy to wear, and most of all FUN. I began by making a line drawing of what I had in mind, and then I began to drape some muslin on my size 7 dress form, in the shapes I was thinking. I started fitting the pieces and making choices, drew and cut a paper pattern from my muslin pieces and I was then ready to cut some fabric and begin the process of making.

Love is so tempting, yes? So I made a red leather Valentines Day dress this year. Interestingly enough it’s actually made from “no-animal” fabrics but I’ve constructed and sewn it in my typical leather working manner. Pieces of printed silk are interspersed on the bodice, hem, and trim along the exposed zipper. The zipper is black metal and finely fabricated with a beautiful matching pull. The red fabric has an exotic lizard leather repeated pattern in the lengthwise direction and is trimmed with a faux smooth black leather. The shape is meant to be sculptural and rounded by the hips, making the drape a bit extreme, yet this also provides a roominess that allows for comfortable wearing.  Happy Valentines Day, kisses.

She had also ordered a belt to be made for one of her favorite silver buckles, so she choose a crinkled black patent leather and we put snaps on it because she liked so many of the different leathers and suedes, that she would now have to opportunity to order other belts for the same buckle and interchange them.

My friend Joel requested that I put in an additional label to his new motorcycle styled jacket that I just made him. He wanted a vintage picture of yours truly in gear.

This is one of my favorites from the late 80′s taken by Buddy R.-at that time a much sought after photographer who made pictures for all the big bike magazines…I remember riding my bike into his studio, he was awesome and with his stylist and make-up artist made me into quite the biker babe!

This picture was eventually made into an ad for the then very-hip magazine called LA style, and actually went on to win an award from LA County Municipal Art Gallery for that year, in the catagory of Best Advertising Art. Wow, that was a coup!

Back to the present…Joel was thrilled with the new label, then Jeff wanted one, so now it’s become an offical and additional label in all my motorcycle jackets.

Cool, right?!

Once these straps have been completed and sew on it’s time to sew in the lining.  You will see that the lining is quite involved. The lavendar cloth is sewn to a matching suede facing where the label (mine this time) and a magnetic closer will be installed.  The metal closer will hold the bag closed when it’s being carried, and is a form of security, of course.  The interior pocket is finished with as much detail as anything on the outside, all of this attention makes the bag luxurious.  I admire the process taken in the original bag, much the same as I use in my bags but I love noticing the differences and learning something new.

When the lining is finished and completely installed I find I am nearing the finish line.  The last part will be installing the metal button on the sides of the straps and the keeper for the straps so that everything attaches to that stunning existing handle from the original piece.  You can now see the finished new bag with the variations that K. has requested. Tomorrow I will show you more pictures of the finished piece and K.’s joyful reaction when she comes to pick it up.

When I begin to cut the suede I will cut all the major pieces first making sure that those are from the best pieces of the skin. All the minor pieces will be cut from what is left over. The lining also gets cut here, because the parts of the lining that are within the bag are often the first to get sewn. I chose a lavendar/tan cloth that is similar to the one used in the original bag but something the sets the color black off. I love a happy un-expected lining for my bags.

Sewing in the pleats to the front and back, the most outstanding of the details on the majors pieces it what I will do first. Then I will hand stitch the detail on the front of the piece. You will see how lovely the detailed pleats are. This is a new detail I have not done before which is one of the reasons I love remaking designer pieces, particularly this French designers.

I considered the bag a classic even though it probably is only a decade or two old. But as most of us lovers of fashion know, some pieces never fade in their brilliance and only get better with age because they typify a period in fashion history and they are so well executed that they become classics in our minds. Some of the elements that I loved and considered classic about this piece was the antler handle, with the custom silver work, and strong metal elements, the soft but firmness of the high quality calf suede, the hand stitching in the pleats and the size.

Because of the genius of the design the handle was removable as well as adjustable so I was able to reuse it and make it new in a way that the eventual new bag could be exchanged back and forth with the old bag depending on the client’s preference. K’s request for variation included making the new bag in black and doubling the depth of the bag so that it could actually carry more.

Leather has made a re-entry into high fashion in a big way. All the top designers are using it, as well as some of the derivatives; faux leather, suede or PVC (Patent Vinyl Cloth) and faux furs.

I get excited watching the runway shows for trends. Stretch Leather is so perfect for the skinny pants you see everywhere for men and women. Leather doesn’t stretch so what manufacturers do  is to fuse a stretch lycra fabric to the back of a particular leather that has been skinned down and is thin. The leather then has some memory and will snap back into shape…this stuff is awesome. You can get a great skinny fit and the garment will stretch with your movements.

For women the skinny pants are worn with everything. My favorite combination that looks very new, is skinny pants under short dresses. The leather pants are being shown short around the ankles with small slits at the bottom or not, with a slim possibly A-line modern and cleanly designed leather dress. The dress can sport different sleeve lengths and different necklines, sexy to business appropriate. For evening the same leggings can be paired with voluminous chiffon dresses or shirts that see through to the body, fabulous lingerie or slip/undershirt, depending on how outrageous you wish to be, be sure to let them see your skinny leather pants underneath! This Cafe-Racer styled motorcycle jacket for women is sleek and form fitting. In a thick but soft cowhide leather and fully lined with interior pockets. Zippered front with no outer pockets and completely fitted bust, waist and neckline. The corset style lacing in the back panel can be left alone for the “look” or actually pulled even tighter if so desired. Metal snap closure or buckle at the collar. Laced bottom to the sleeve which can also pull tight or loosen up.

I made this suede jacket/coat by custom order from a woman that wanted men’s styling. We made it a bit more body conforming with the seaming down front and back. Then added some interest with the X style lacing across the yokes.

This crocheted poncho is styled out of individual squares into a beautiful patchwork of shades of blue designed to go with any denim color. Finished off with powder blue suede fringe and shown here with our blue suede cargo pants.

Suede Cargo pants can be made in a variety of shapes and styling and have been a very hip fashion for almost a decade. We’ve made a lot of them! So many pocket options is appealing, and this style in suede is elegant too. The shape of these is loose and comfortable. Fully lined with backside flap pockets, front slash pockets and patch flap pockets on the legs.  The tie-dye shirt is eye catching and interesting. Both pieces are made in a medium weight calf suede, soft but durable. With snap front closure and patch pocket, a classic shape. The hat is a modified bucket style with snakeskin print in the brim and a few metal studs around the top for interest. All items can be found in our online store for sale.

Fanny Packs went out of style almost 2 decades ago but have you noticed that people still love the idea of a bag that does not have to be held, yet fastens to your person…. which pretty much eliminates one losing it. Someway or another I think it’s a fashion idea that won’t die. My way of approaching it in 2012 is to make it into a fascinating shape with interest in the details.

This bag one of my newest belt pouches has a fullness and shape that screams purse but attaches to your body by a thin and attractive belt. The pouch can actually be unhooked from the belt to be used a a handheld bag, or be hooked to another purse or your belt loops. The belt of course can be separated to become a belt for your pants or decorate a blouse, shirt or dress. A male version of this concept can be easily construed.

The pouch itself has a interior zipped pocket and is lined with a chamois suede that has a subtle print. The exterior is a smooth fine calf leather that you’d expect to see in a pair of shoes. The finish is a bronzy-gold that is somewhat mottled in color and is interesting to look at. It is finished with a long tassel in the point at the bottom of a rounded shape. I’ve added one of my key hook-decorators that has a fox fur tail on it, a few beads and some bright and contrasting leather strands, fun when the person wearing it is moving as the decoration moves and accentuates the movements.

I made this bag for Kerry S. this month. She had a specific bag that she gave me with all kinds of notes written on it. We discussed her ideas and selected the leathers. We began experimenting with the “cut-edge” in our garments which showed the edge of the leather without being finished (rolled and stitched). Instead the edge is cut and stitched to the facings showing the raw edge of the material in contrast to other parts of the styling and are applied in layers. 3 shades of lavendar suede with lavendar and blue printed snakeskin accents. We began combining black leather with distressed brown leather and it looked really good, distressed leather was just making it’s debut and we used it alot…..a pre-cursor that brought on the look of “grunge”. Wow, what an amazing individual Mr. Newman was. He’s the definition of Kismet, so charming and those blue eyes, enough to leave the seamstress almost speechless. It was an honor to work for the man, he was so very kind and appreciated the work immensely. He taught me about the color Gold-Green and how important it can be in a gentleman’s wardrobe. He brought his amazing wife, Ms. Woodard  in to meet me, and suggested she might like to have some leather made too. But she reminded him of that “white leather dress” they had purchased for her, in that famous European leather goods shop in Paris, that she spilled red wine on the first time she wore it, and just could not bring herself to purchase leather again, even though she quite liked my work! They were delightful together. The day Mr. Newman picked up his finished jacket from Leather Waves, he put it on and was inspecting it in front of the mirror, and said, “My goodness I’m becoming an Antique!” And I said, “Mr. Newman you are the best looking antique I’ve ever seen!” He smiled and let me take this photo standing outside my shop door, extremely generous he was, I’ll never forget him.

I just love this woman! We worked together for years and I adored making her clothes. This outfit was one of the most infamous, made from the most lush french hair-on calf. The Perfect Leather Jacket….probably the item most considered when people think of making a leather purchase. My experience says that fit is everything. How should a leather jacket fit? It needs to be comfortable first and for-most. What makes a leather jacket comfortable. Has to be roomy in the shoulders and chest, don’t forget we’ll be wearing that jacket over our clothes. It has to fit well when closed, buttoned or zipped. It has to drape well when it’s open. The armholes have to to roomy for the same reason, comfort and mobility. The top of the arms can not bind your movement, and the sleeve length has to be ample. When you bend your arms to drive or carry something, the sleeve still needs to reach the wrist. What do you think, what’s most important to you when you wear your leather jacket?

We did alot of white leather this year, and we wanted to include the men. We used white lambskin that was finished and not matte, so that you could wipe it off with a wet cloth and keep it clean. The jacket was a men’s bolero cut kind of short waisted without a collar and kind of minimal, cut in shouldered sleeves with should pads. the pants were cut into long arrow panels and topstitched and narrowed at the ankles, that was new this year. That’s Nidra Winger Moss and I back in 1976 or “77 at the first incarnation of Leather Waves in the Malibu Country Mart. I was 23 and I think Nidra was 18 or 19. How sweet and tender we were. Nidra worked with me on and off for 20 years. She became much more than my first and most valued ever employee. She’s the most superb human being. She went on to serve the Malibu community in so many ways. We always enjoyed each other’s company, she was fully trustworthy in every way and she became a skillful leatherworker. At the time of this photo I was making handlaced leather clothing, which were patchworked pieces laced together with leather laces that we cut by hand, (see the skirt I am wearing), they became very popular and Nidra was my chief lacer…her work was always perfect, and she was fast! I was blessed with Nidra, we became lifelong friends, and I appreciate her so much! In the day, Nidra was one of the most sought after beauties on Surfrider beach…with her long beautiful blond hair, mini skirts and beautiful smile, she had all the guys falling off their boards and doing summersaults on the shore, giggle :0)

   That’s a hard call. We all visit our closets daily and pull those clothes to wear that will provide the functions we need. How important is a Jacket? During the span of my career the most requested items have been, the perfect leather jacket, the reliable leather purse, a well constructed leather wallet, a pair of leather pants that fit well….and many others. We all want to look good and project the truest image of ourselves well, so Fashion becomes important too. In my learning process as a designer of fashionable Leather Goods I have realized the old adage of “Form Follows Function”. I interpret this to mean that if the function of our clothing is expressed in a good-looking way, we end up with a garment who’s life is well worth the investment. Leather Waves was located in the Malibu Country Mart for 32 years, and is proud to claim that it’s establishment is the oldest in this very hip and heavily visited shopping area. Having opened in the summer of 1975 at the inception of the Center, Leather Waves was one of it’s first tenant.

In 2005 the Malibu Country Mart location was closed, and Jackie built a Studio on her own property in Malibu 15 minutes from the Atelier. This store was called The Leather Waves Jewelbox. In 2007 this studio burnt in a Malibu wildfire.

Leather Waves, the fragrance, was a concept long before it became a a reality. Jackie examined the needs and requests of her clientele and distilled one truth about the feedback she received. The truth is that everyone loves the smell of leather. The scent conjures up feelings of sensuality and passion. Leather Waves the Fragrance, was the product that Jackie Robbins dreamed of bringing to her public. She offered the scent of the leather maker’s workshop surrounded by cool, clean Pacific Ocean breezes. A scent “to wear on leather jacket days”.

Leather Waves the Fragrance, is a refined blend of pure oils and alcohol in a two-ounce Eau de Parfum Spray or a half-ounce Parfum. Each bottle is packaged in an individually handcrafted leather drawstring pouch. Available exclusively through Jackie Robbins Leather Waves.

Sadly our stock of Leather Waves the Fragrance was lost in 2007, when a malibu wildfire burned our studio to the ground. As of this moment we have still not been able to find a specialist to reformulate the scent as it was intended, some of the ingredients are not available at this time.

This week I had alot of fun with my friend Alexa Herrera making a pair of chaps for her to go dancing in. She hung-out with me and helped. These photos show our process start to finish.

I just moved to Malibu few months ago and I am so happy to have found a real jewel in Malibu! You made the whole experience very enjoyable for me. Leather Maker Jackie Robbins Practices Sacred Art

Jackie Robbins of Malibu has been making leather products for four decades.

Jackie Robbins has had her fair share of setbacks since getting into the leather business more than 40 years ago. But through it all, she has kept things in perspective and never given up. Now, the longtime Malibu local is ready to reach great heights again with her studio in Corral Canyon, which was recently rebuilt following its destruction in the 2007 fire that also claimed her house and most of her private and business possessions.

Although Robbins’ business has never stopped functioning, it did slow down after the Thanksgiving weekend fire that devastated a neighborhood and during nearly four years of rebuilding.

“Now, I’m trying to answer the big question, ‘How does a small businessperson such as myself stay in business in Malibu?’” Robbins said.

She is trying different things, including the use of her website, inviting people to the studio, offering deals through Facebook and in general getting the word out that although she was never gone, she is back to full strength.

Making clothes is in Robbins’ blood. She grew up in Los Angeles with a mother and grandmother in the knitting business. Robbins learned from these masters, and at age 17 as the 1970s began, she went out on her own to take a job at a leather shop in Laguna Beach.

“The person that owned that shop was a very flaky businessman,” Robbins said. “And because I am a pretty competent person, I was running that shop in about a year.”

This served as the trade school for the woman who had no formal training. When she had completed her real-world studies, Robbins was ready to move back to Los Angeles County, choosing to settle in Malibu because of the similarities she saw in its beauty with Laguna Beach.

Robbins soon started her business Leather Waves, a name inspired by the 1974 Bob Dylan album Planet Waves. He was a customer shortly after the release of the album.

“He came up here in a beat-up old van with an armload of leather jackets needing to be repaired,” she said. “And I was just crazy about that album. I played it all the time, and I got the idea for Leather Waves.”

In 1975, Robbins, a 22-year-old ambitious woman, saw that retail legend Fred Segal was constructing a mall called Malibu Country Mart on the east end of Malibu. Having known him a little because she worked at his store on Melrose Avenue as a high school student, Robbins told him she wanted to open a store in the new mall. A skeptical Segal allowed her to become one of the first tenants.

With “a sewing machine, one pair of pants, a purse and $500,” Robbins began her three-decade presence at Malibu Country Mart.

Just one month in, she met her first challenge. Segal told Robbins another business wanted to move into her space (Wilson’s House of Suede and Leather), and he believed it was a better option. She responded frankly, “That’s too bad, you have already made a lease with me.”

Segal backed down, and Robbins said she thinks she earned his respect in that situation. The two have remained friends and colleagues since.

“Fred Segal was the best landlord I had at the Malibu Country Mart… Besides the fact he was a brilliant retailer who was very successful, he was willing to give information to all his tenants on how to do it right,” Robbins said. “Few people would listen to him, but I did because I was young and didn’t know how to do it.  I had a great deal of respect for him, in my mind he became by business mentor.”

For the next 23 years, Robbins became a fixture at the mall with her shop on the first floor. She grew an extensive customer base and enjoyed doing what she calls the “sacred art” of leather making while earning a living doing it.  23 years later the new landlord said her rent would be doubled. It appeared Robbins would have to leave.

At the last moment, she was told a spot had opened on the second floor of another building in the shopping center, Robbins took it, turned it from an abandoned restaurant kitchen into a mysteriously semi-hidden treasure filled Atelier (a french word that describes an upstairs loft where the Designer works) and remained there for another seven years.

In late 2004, she was informed that her rent would triple. This time, there would be no last-minute offerings to save the shop. Staying at the mall would be impossible.

“I didn’t really want to get into sour grapes about it because I do believe in capitalism and I do think in a retail area, you have to have businesses that can pay the rent,” Robbins said. “But I did feel this sort of lack of any loyalty … I was a little hurt that I was brushed off so easily, but I never thought of it as the end of my business.”

So Robbins took her business home. She built a studio on her Corral Canyon property that opened in early 2006. Then came the Corral Fire in November 2007.

Having lived in Malibu for so many years, Robbins was familiar with the threat of fire, and had been in the danger zone for at least half a dozen blazes before this one, but she had never evacuated, always staying with her property thru the ordeal. This time was different, and Robbins filled up the trunk of her car with a computer, important papers, one bag of clothes, her dog and some photo albums. Robbins’ teenage daughter was out of town.

Three hours later, Robbins watched her house and shop being destroyed on a television at her friend’s home.

“I cried for some time,” she said.

The next week, she was able to return to the property. A guesthouse and a shed stood, but the house and shop were totally destroyed. Also lost were an extensive personal leather wardrobe, store inventory, supplies, tools—everything.

“Those things were very valuable to me in terms of memory and in terms of keeping my identity,” she said. “One of the things about the trauma of all the loss was that I felt like I lost my identity, even though I realized through the process that I did not.”

The process included battling with the insurance company to make sure she got as much money as she could to cover at least a majority of the costs and a rebuilding effort that became a full-time job. Through the losses and the struggle to rebuild, Robbins gained a new perspective on life.

“Your memories are not really attached to things,” she said. “I still have all my memories. I just don’t have the stuff. And in the end, I would say it was sort of a liberation to be relieved of all these things because I don’t think in life we realize that everything you own, you carry on your back. So you get to be middle-aged and suddenly you have a big load to drag around with you; we call that baggage. I got rid of all my baggage and I got a check for it.”

No two Leather Waves products are the same. They are all handmade by Robbins, and many are based on requests from clients. She will make just about anything, although Robbins has had to turn down a few unusual requests over the years that should not be described on a family friendly website.

“The most rewarding thing about my business is that people come to me with an idea, and I make it into a reality,” she said. “It’s thrilling and fulfilling. I’ve gotten better and better at it over the years.”

She calls leather making a sacred art because it involves the use of animal skins.

“I believe the use of skins has a sacred aspect to it,” Robbins said. “An animal has died, and I’m using what’s left to make something. To me, there is a sacred aspect to that.”

She continued, “I don’t waste anything. I keep pieces of leather until they’re very small, and I just keep making things, making things. I really feel there is a spiritual value to it.”

This sexy little black dress is made from the softest and thinest black Plonget cowhide. Light as a feather and matte in finish it drapes the body without hugging it. Fully lined in black matte satin finished fabric and zipps down the back. It has slight puffed and pleat runched elbow length sleeves. The length is classic and hovers around the knees. It has a low empire waistline with a narrow body and skirt, one 6″ slit at the center bottom back allows for walking comfortably. The neckline is squarish in shape and medium low cut.

I happened to be downtown one afternoon visiting one of my suppliers, MacPhearson Leather Co. I was settling my bill and about ready to walk out with my skins, and in walked Bob Dylan. I was absolutely breathless for a minute because I considered him to be one of America’s greatest poets, even then, and I loved his music. Luckily I was dressed in my own designs, a Suede Jean Jacket and Suede Bell-Bottomed pants decorated with vintage drapery fabrics, (very hippie) so I gathered my courage and decided to approach him because I knew he loved to wear leather. He was very nice, friendly and interested in taking my business card. A week later he called and asked if I could repair a couple of his leather jackets, and I said “sure”.

Bob arrived at my little studio in the Malibu hills (the same one I am back working in now, in 2011) driving an old beat-up van, and jumped out with an armload of jackets, the ones he was wearing in his “Rolling Thunder Revue” concert tour. I got to hang out with Bob for awhile while I fixed his buttonholes and it was a stellar day in my leather working career. I saw him again about 7 years later when Bob started coming to Leather Waves, my storefront at the Malibu Country Mart in the mid-80’s. I got to make him a few things, he liked suede shirts, he bought gifts for Sarah and he sent his friends in. One day George Harrison (yes, the Beatle) came by because Bob sent him in to look for a vest…how cool was that?! Bob and I had a few leather adventures and I was eager to be in his service just to be in his presence!

My best Bob story is the one where he paid me for a leather favor by bringing me a dozen eggs from his chickens. He drove up to the entrance doorway of my shop in a vintage Eldorado Convertible and handed me the carton of eggs, said thanks and took off.

When did you move to Malibu and why?

1974,  I wanted to live close to Nature and grow my own food. I remember hanging out in Topanga as a teenager, and driving up the coast to check out the surf.  I’ve never lost the love of that feeling of freedom.  I started doing leatherwork, designing and making clothing by chance, I opened a little shop and that became a lifelong career and passion.  The people I work for have provided the inspiration.

What are you doing in Malibu now?

Recovering, rebuilding, restarting after the November wildfires that took my home and business.  I have a wonderful new Malibu location with easy PCH access, until my new shop gets built. I find that the mood in fashion is more gentile, kind and even romantic. I’m expanding into personalized custom clothing in other fabrications. I’m making more things for the home, items of function that are beautiful and finely crafted. I love making leather clothing and all the accessories, as a master leather maker, I find the possibilities are exciting and absolutely endless.

What is the best part of “Malibu”?

The people. The environment. Fresh air. Unfettered, unconventional sophistication.  As a “place” it is still wild, alive, self-renewing.

What is the worst part of “Malibu”?

Too much consumption going on in a fragile environment. Politics that don’t produce positive results. Cost of living in high gear moving upwards.

What do you think about the changes in Malibu?

We’re witnessing the elimination of funk, down-home, laid-back and casual. Originality seems to be hiding! We see homogenization and gentrification taking its place. Everything changes, and I think there is still a lot more sifting and shifting that will take place before the ballet is “in”.  There is still hope; my vision for Malibu may yet unfold. It’s a vision of a very modern community cohesive in it’s commitment to preserving our environment, creativity oozing out of it’s pores, it’s citizens deliriously happy with the simple pleasures we appreciate daily. However, the way in which we spend our dollars will create the scenarios we’ll end up living in. If you don’t dig what’s happening in your community, don’t BUY it.

The Story

I’ve been in business in the same town for a long time, I’m planning on sticking around and being creative for a lot longer. There are at least a hundred jackets left in me!  I still am and always will be honest, friendly and open-minded. I always do my work with excellence. I give more than the customer pays for, and they always come back! When I opened Leather Waves, at the then brand new Malibu Country Mart, I started with one pair of leather pants, a purse and a sewing machine. 32 years later I’m re-opening Leather Waves with one pair of leather pants, a purse and a sewing machine, it’s freaky and it’s fresh and it’s a lot of fun, I really like it and feel completely blessed.

Little 10 year old Taryn Van Vleet had her leather show outfits custom made

“My target client lives here,” says Jackie Robbins, owner of Leather Waves, an upscale custom clothing and accessory store located in Malibu’s Country Mart since 1975. “They’re involved in community projects and events. They do things that have to do with charity and that are larger than their own lives. They’re in the public eye and in the media.”

Robbins says the Chamber has helped her to get to know her customer. “Over the last 5 years, the Chamber has really improved in doing things that are viable for local business,” says Robbins. “It has become a lot more sophisticated.” Robbins says one of the best efforts of the Chamber this past year was a survey that explained the demographics of Malibu. “It told us who lives in Malibu, what the average income is, the average lifestyle, number of children, likes and dislikes,” says Robbins. “. If they need beach bags and I make evening bags, they’re not going to sell.”

“In 27 years, I’ve seen 100 businesses come and go in the Country Mart,” says Robbins. “I think it’s because they don’t grasp the needs of the community. Malibu has a calm, relaxed, peaceful lifestyle. If your aspirations are in line with that, I think you’re likely to succeed.” 

Lovely Ellen Heuer wore “Leather Waves” to the Academy Awards Ceremony at the new Kodak Theatre in Hollywood California Sunday night.

The two-time Oscar recipient in Best Sound, was thrilled to be adorned in the one-of-a-kind Evening-Gown designed especially for the event by Jackie Robbins. The designer described the dress as “Marie Antoinette meets the Rolling Stones at Sunset on the Beach.” The Cut-Away Bolero Jacket, Purse and Dress was brilliantly constructed of delicately embroidered lapis blue lamb skin with metallic threads and moon-stone colored beads, a bronze leather lining and iridescent royal blue taffeta silk. Alma wore a custom made leather outfit designed for her for the event by Jackie Robbins. The designer stated the outfit was a collaborative effort between client and designer to create a personalized look for the black-tie event that reflected the client’s very hip and sexy style with class and grace. The outfit was made of a pearlized butter soft lambskin, in a double-tone silver and gold. Trimmed in brass grommets and laces finished in crystals and beads.

Congratulations to Jimmy for the amazing creation of his film “Reversal”, which he starred in, directed and wrote! He took home “Best Film” prizes in competition, and then moved on to New York’s film festival to do the same!

I was very lucky last month to get the opportunity to visit Paris, oui! Paris, France! Needless to say, Springtime in this city is intoxicating. My focus was art and fashion, of course. It’s been at least a dozen years since my last visit, so it felt like visiting dear old friends to see certain works of art, sculptures and gardens again, and to re-experience the rich architecture and layers of history that permeate everything. I loved the press of humanity in all it’s varied forms, the French really know how to LIVE! The weather, the cafes, and the food were fabulous. If you’re a French woman you must wear a wonderful purse and a beautiful scarf, and I saw so many incredible ones. The best boutiques were filled with color, color, COLOR…reds, oranges, golds, bright greens. Wow, dazzling and delightful for the eyes.

I made a “perfect” 3-piece pale navy nubuck suede suit for the adventure. A 3/4 sleeve jacket with lots of patch pockets, short pants with bells at the calf and a sexy ringed zipper up the back, and a straight skirt slung low on the hip-no waist with the same zipper as the pants; and slits everywhere on all the pieces. The suit traveled really well, and not only looked RIGHT but “Tres Chic” everywhere I went. A suit, a few great tops, sandals and a pair of short boots, almost all I needed for the trip.

I did a wonderful outfit for Beth. She brought in a full length Raccoon Coat that she has owned forever. We turned it inside out and created a new Leather outercoat for it in Cocoa Ostrich Printed Lamb Skin, and a pair of pants to match. It turned out absolutely stunning, she was so please. When Jackie Robbins, owner of Leather Waves in the Malibu Country Mart, says she offers personalized service, she is more than mouthing a shopping slogan. Robbins creates custom leather and suede clothing and accessories for men, women and children. Her designs are unique and her garments are made-to-measure in the store’s upstairs studio. “At a mall store with mass-produced merchandise, you have to make compromises,” says Robbins, who has been in business for 27 years. “Why not get exactly what you want?”
