When Jackie
Robbins, owner of Leather Waves in the Malibu Country Mart, says
she offers personalized service, she is more than mouthing a shopping
slogan. Robbins creates custom leather and suede clothing and accessories
for men, women and children. Her designs are unique and her garments
are made-to-measure in the store's upstairs studio. "At a mall
store with mass-produced merchandise, you have to make compromises," says
Robbins, who has been in business for 27 years. "Why not get exactly
what you want?"
Lining her shop's
walls are photos of Robbins' celebrity customers, including Paul
Newman, Brooke Shields, Celine Dion, and Goldie Hawn. However,
most of Leather Waves' clientele are people who just want a little
guidance in navigating fashion trends. "I help clients figure out
what looks good on them, so they don't feel they're shopping alone."
The perfect
outfit customized to your taste and shape does not come cheap.
But you end up with a one-of-a-kind quality item that fits perfectly
and lasts for years. It's the result, says Robbins, of one-on-one
attention. "It's all about service, service, service."
